Spring has arrived. The plants and trees are sprouting vibrant colours to see. The birds are creating beautiful songs and shrill squawks to hear. The sun is producing more and more heat to feel. And your nostrils are increasingly filled with that BBQ smell.
Aaah, breathe it in. Most of us can’t help but smile at the happy memories that are triggered as you do. It’s a smell that is so distinct and so familiar, yet difficult to describe. It’s smoky. It’s meaty. If you close your eyes, you can see the flames and hear the sizzle.
There’s nothing more exciting than getting home, using your nose to detect a burning barbie and hoping – praying even – that it’s coming from your backyard.
Like all stimulations of the senses, the smell of the BBQ has unique associations for everybody and these often extend far beyond the food. For some, it means sitting on the patio having a few drinks with friends, or relaxing in a sunny park overlooking the ocean. For others, it means having a bash in the backyard cricket field of dreams or indulging in a laidback family feast.
