Like a lot of people, I grew up thinking that barbecuing was the sole domain of men. Mum was Queen of the kitchen and Dad, King of the barbie. That’s just the way it was. Just like Mum drank wine and Dad drank beer.
Until one day, when Mum slapped on Dad’s “I Grill 2 Thrill” apron, and Dad pulled the cork on a bottle of cab sav.
That day was long long ago and Mums across Australia are now firing up the barbie in record numbers. What’s more, they’re damn good at it!
So this Mother’s Day, why not let your Mum know how much you appreciate her efforts on the BBQ? Instead of a foot spa that she’ll use twice and then put at the top of the linen closet, get her a skillet basket so that she can expand her barbecuing repertoire. Instead of flowers that will be dead in a week, get her a brand new stainless steel BBQ that she’ll put to use for years to come. And instead of a gift card that basically says, “Sorry Mum, I couldn’t be bothered”, get her a BBQ light that will ensure she can see what she’s doing when cooking you up yet another delicious feast.
To Mums everywhere, Happy Mother’s Day! And keep firing up that barbie!
